| Another law firm Web site that uses cookies. We're not sure why a firm would bother to implement this controversial "feature." After all, these sites aren't making their money from page views (like Yahoo) or from personalized content (like My Yahoo). Plus, the fact that the cookie use is not conspicuously disclosed bothers us. The splash page includes two cliches: the Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator buttons. Why not include buttons for the computer serving up the content, or the Internet service provider, or the electric company? This site's home page proclaims "Making the law work." Frankly, we'd prefer working for a firm that made the law fun! You have to consider a site's target audiences. Clients will want a firm that makes the law work, potential law firm employees will want a firm that makes the law fun. So it comes as no surprise to us that there are no recruiting links on the home page. The site features links to two "Business Forums," one of which (www.deregulation.com) was a separate Web site, the other of which was under construction. In addition to the separate Web site, the firm publishes a daily e-mail bulletin regarding utility deregulation in the Northeast. Publications were included under "R&C Spotlight," not where we'd expect to find them, and only three dated 1998 were listed. Since many people access a site for its publications, we'd recommend including publications at the top level in the navigation bar. Similarly, we'd move recruiting information, which was under "Our Firm," up a level. Our search for "cookie" lead us to the Microsoft Site Server statistics page (http://www.rc.com/stats.html), which wasn't what we expected. Otherwise, search engine output was excellent, but many of the found pages lacked titles or didn't use bookmark-friendly titles. |
