| The home page does not create a very good first impression. It has a 1996 copyright notice and HTML coding that feels like the home-grown variety. On the "Practice Areas" page, the text appears in ALL CAPS, and the "Os" in "TAXATION" and "PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY" are actually zeros, so unless people use a creative spelling for "taxation," search engines won't find this page. We think it should go without saying that pages should be spell-checked. Attorney profiles used a combination resume/narrative style, but we expected the file sizes of the photographs to be smaller, especially since they were black and white. Under "Publications" are some of the firm's newsletters, but we almost missed the search engine, which is at the top of the page, not in the navigation bar where we'd expect to find it. And the Excite search engine appeared to be housed on a separate server, and that server did not respond when we tried to search the site. The navigation bar included both graphics and text elements, but the current section was always omitted from the navigation bar. The better approach is to include the current section in the navigation bar, and to add some sort of you-are-here visual feedback so that the navigation bar tells you both where you are and where you can go. |
