We can't resist knocking the firm's "welcome" message. They resist the urge to welcome us to the site, but instead their header graphic proclaims: "KIRKLAND & ELLIS on the Internet's World-Wide Web at www.kirkland.com." Huh? We didn't realize there was more than one "world-wide web"... if there are others, please tell us. Awkward phrasing aside, the design of the site also leaves a bit to be desired. The navigation bar on the left has a thick blue line around it - because the programmer failed to put in a simple HTML command (border=0). As a result, the browser treats the image as an active link - and highlights it, much like it does with text. It looks bad, and should be eliminated. The text on the "Technology/E-mail" page proclaims that K&E "is one of the legal industry leaders in the application of computer technology to the practice of law." Yet we don't see much evidence of that here. Instead of showcasing any technology to interact with their database of attorneys, they provide links to Martindale-Hubbell's listings for their offices. This is better than no directory at all, but where's that application of computer technology? The Publications page is under construction - with just a handful of entries listed from '96 and '97 (but none from '98). There are no practice area descriptions, and the recruiting information consists primarily of the firm's NALP form (compare that with other firms who have provided the less quantifiable information that still provides useful data for law students to use in evaluating recruiting info).
