Lesson #1: patience. When we tried to load this site (2 pm EST), it took almost five full minutes for the server to respond. That means one of two things: either the server is so extraordinarily busy that it can't handle our request to view the page, or the server's connection is so slow that it took that long to receive and reply to our request. We doubt that the site is getting cnn.com-like traffic, so we guess #2 is the case. There's no reason for such poor service: solid connectivity for web hosting costs $20/month. This is then compounded by the fact that pages like the attorney list is over 100k long (every attorney in the firm is listed on the same page) - which means that visitors to the site can end up waiting for along time to see information. The attorney listing is very poorly laid out - rather than list them alphabetically, they are divided by practice area, then within that division, they are separated by position in the firm (shareholder, associate, or staff attorney), and only half of the attorneys listed actually have bios. And e-mail addresses aren't listed - they're linked by the word "e-mail". Needless to say, it isn't that easy to read. There's a lot of new content on the site - like press releases - but there's little else that would compel someone to return. Echoing the attorney list layout, the practice group descriptions are bunched on the same page - which also takes forever to load. After a few minutes on the site, there was a lot to find frustrating. The attorney listing, for example, doesn't take the typical route of alphabetizing the list: instead, the list is divided first by topic, then by position in the firm, and THEN by alphabet. Not exactly the most intuitive organization we've seen. And the 120k page loads particularly slowly. The site presentation is inconsistent, and the graphics are amateurish. We DO like the contact information - the addresses and phone numbers are provided for all offices. Like the attorney list, the practice list is all on one page. It's one third the size of the attorney list, but still takes forever to load.
