That means that instead of each link representing a link to a static page, it is a link to a database query, which in turn presents data that satisfies the query. While these sites take more effort to set up, over the long term they make the site much easier to maintain (if you add one article, you don't need to re-code a dozen pages to link to it; you simply put it in the database and future queries will see it) and configure (because queries can be easily modified to present the data in different ways). Clearly, a database structure invites more flexibility and customization. This is evident with Heller Ehrman's site, where you are likely to see the same pieces of information (an attorney listing, a new article, etc.) in a variety of places. While this makes the organization a little more fluid (and therefore harder to conceptualize for the visitor), it is ultimately much more tailored to the visitor: because they are likely to see exactly what they want, when they want. Though we take issue with a few presentation decisions (practice group pages are one example where it takes too many clicks to get to substantive information, and the persistent bottom frame is much larger than necessary), overall the site is well done. |
