| So here's a first. Brown and Wood has registered two domain names: bwllp.com (registered 12/96) and brownwoodlaw.com (registered 07/97). To compound matters, the InterNIC's registered domain name database (www.internic.net) shows that bwllp.com is registered to "BROWN AND WOOD LLP" (all caps) and brownwoodlaw.com registered to "Brown & Wood LLP." A few problems with this. Searching the InterNIC's database for "brown and wood" will find only bwllp.com (which is what we did), while searching for "brown & wood" finds nothing (due to the way the InterNIC's search engine works). (And if you're curious, searching for "brown wood" returns brownwoodprod.com, the domain name for a Illinois-based woodworking company.) Plus, the Web site www.bwllp.com says "Welcome to the Future Website of bwllp.com," and that site does not link to the www.brownwoodlaw.com site. It wasn't due to a lack of effort on our part, but we didn't find the www.brownwoodlaw.com site until after our reviews were published. So we've made an exception to our rule about not re-reviewing sites beyond our cut-off date. We believe this is the first firm we've found with two active Web sites (neither of which points to the other) registered to two different spellings of the firm's name. Doctor doctor, it hurts when I do this. Don't do that! On with our review. In addition to the domain-name-o-rama fun, this firm has come close to setting a record for the size of a home page graphic. The animated splash page graphic (which is very pretty) weighs in at a hefty 362K. And since it's the holidays, and we're in a particularly charitable mood, here's a URL where we've placed a bit-stripped unanimated version of the graphic that weighs in at a respectable 52K: http://www.redstreet.com/Museum1998/brownwoodlaw/bwhome2.gif. Overall, the presentation of the splash page and home page is quite nice. We're glad to see a little innovation from a West FirmSite, which in general are short on creativity. Attorney profiles were located under "Our Firm." Since this is a frequently-accessed part of the site, we'd recommend moving this to the top level of the site structure. When you click on a selected profile, you are sent to West's Legal Directory site (www.wld.com), but the look-and-feel is the same. We searched for addresses and phone numbers under "Offices" (where we'd expect to find such information), and we finally found this information (two clicks away) under "Contact Us." We think that basic information such as addresses and phone numbers shouldn't be this hard to find. There was some substantive content under "Insights," but we'd suggest naming this something more intuitive, such as "Publications." Page titles were bookmark-friendly, which made search engine output more useful. This is a good first start at a Web site. A periodical-style home page, one which featured summaries of new firm publications and developments, would make a huge improvement on visitors' experience. |
